Welcome to the world of Steampunk:

First of all let’s make clear that the word PUNK in SteamPUNK has absolutely nothing to do with the anachronistic Punk culture.
Steampunk refers to a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that incorporates technology and aesthetic designs inspired by 19th-century industrial steam-powered machinery.

Depending on which resource you reference, be it the Wikipedia entry or Steampunk.com, you will find a variety of answers and interpretations to this creative movement that has been growing in popularity, but also capturing mainstream. It’s instantly recognisable, but difficult to explain.

Steampunk is a subgenre of speculative fiction, usually set in an Victorian or quasi-Victorian alternate history setting. The term “Steampunk” originated in the late 1980s from science fiction author K. W. Jeter who described steampunk by the slogan "What the past would look like if the future had happened sooner." For Example: Imagine that the computer had been invented in 1800 and used steampower as an energy source. How would that computer then have looked like? Well, that's steampunk.

Steampunk includes fiction with science, fairytale and fantasy themes.
It's all about mixing old and new: fusing the usability of modern technology with the design aesthetic and philosophy of the Victorian age.

Recycling waste of our industrial society is the inspiration of my artwork:

All sculptures are entirely hand made from recycled scrap such as metal, copper, brass and steel. I create art with all kinds of technology and techniques to soften the design despite the roughness and robust properties of the material itself. Therefore I create art with a respectful atmosphere and sometimes funny or even cynical view of reality.

Most of my sculptures are custom made but I also have plenty objects which can be purchased immediately. Every sculpture is unique but on request I can make a replica of previous work. The differences in those replicas can be seen in unique details and therefore remain one-of-a-kind pieces. My artwork knows no boundaries and all sculptures can be shipped worldwide.

Steampunk Sphere Lamp Collection.
For creating these extraordinary lamps I use recycled expansion tanks from heating systems. These tanks are made in various shapes. The tanks that I use come originally from Germany. As far as I know this is the only country where they use round expansion tanks. Since I 'm living and working near the German border is relatively easy for me to find these tanks on German scrap yards.



First I make the inside coating from polyester. Then the design is drawn on the red tank. Eventually, the remaining parts are cut with a plasma cutter (Hypertherm). For the perfection and finishing touch I design the matching Steampunk base. These conversation pieces come in various sizes and designs. Almost any design is possible as long it contains a vector ( a black and white image.)

Steampunk Variety Collection.
For these smaller Steampunk pieces, I use all kinds of recycled materials such as copper, brass and steel. Hereby I search for special shapes and combine these objects together. The challenges in making these pieces are mainly combining the different metals. Ultimately, these practical constraints always deliver an exceptional result. These pieces are not only One Of a Kind Art Pieces but also utensils objects such as lamps and clocks.

Steampunk Alchemy Project.
With this project I wanted to create One Of A Kind Art with a true story to tell. Therefore I like to call them Conversation Pieces. By the use of LED light the specimens are put in a soft spotlight so all details can be viewed properly. The carbon filament lamps are equipped with a dimmer switch and can be set at any desired brightness. This way the pieces each have their own mysterious aura. With a little imagination, these Steampunk Incubator Machines will come to life.



The most common question regarding my Alchemy Project is how do I get the specimens in my possession. The answer is that I work with two professional taxidermists. It seems contradictory , but it's almost impossible for me to explain with how much love for animals they do their job. I only work with these two professional taxidermists but did you know that specimens are simply offered on Ebay?

None of the animals are killed with the intention to preserve them. The animals have either died by age or illness. In some cases, the animals are euthanized by a veterinarian in order to avoid unnecessary suffering. Both taxidermists have close connections with several veterinarians and zoos. Once an interesting animal is deceased they are offered for preparation.

SteamBugs.
In these Alchemy versions I use small insects and other small animals such as larvae’s, insects and fetuses. The main differences between the regular Alchemy pieces and these smaller versions is not oly the size but also the absence the typical carbon filament lamps. I only use a small LED light to place the creatures in a mysterious spotlight. Some pieces of this serie are equipped with a adjustable magnifying glass to study the little creatures properly.

SteamTools.
Steamtools are urban decoration pieces made of antique tools with all kind of handcut designs using a plasma cutter. Fun as nameplates at your front door but also awesome as a piece of art on a wall. All kinds of designs are possible but still limited by the size of the tool. It's also possible to make a base or a socle on which the tools can be displayed.

Steampunk Street Art Collection.
I build these three Steampunk-isch Mobile Pieces in 2006 for an interactive street theatre exhibition with a 40 minutes performance. This has resulted in a visual spectacle with 12 actors, unique costumes and these three impressive steel vehicles. All three vehicles are completely dismountable and can be transported in a van or box truck. Once constructed, the objects can be moved easily by single manpower. All three pieces feature fire torches operating on propane.
